Your brand and the new AI search engines

Search is changing shape. Alongside the list of blue links, Google is rolling out a conversational mode, Perplexity answers directly with its sources, and more and more people put their questions to Gemini or ChatGPT instead of typing keywords. For a brand this opens new ground: what these AI engines say about you, and who they recommend, becomes at least as important as your place in classic results.

Search becomes an answer, not a list

For twenty years, being visible meant appearing in a list of links. An AI engine does not list: it synthesises. It reads several sources and returns a single answer that names two or three brands. If you are in it, the customer discovers you in the very sentence that answers their question. If you are not, there is no second line to explore.

This shift is speeding up: Gartner expects traditional search volume to fall by around 25 percent by the end of 2026, in favour of conversational assistants. The question is no longer only "where do I appear in the list", but "does the answer mention me".

Each AI engine has its own answers

Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and ChatGPT do not work the same way. Some rely mostly on live web search and cite their sources; others answer first from their training memory. As a result, a brand can be well handled by one and ignored by another, on the same question.

That is what makes testing a single tool misleading. Checking only ChatGPT ignores what Perplexity or Google's AI mode users see. A serious read of your visibility goes through several engines at once, and accounts for those that actually dominate in your market and your language.

Why classic search ranking is no longer enough

Ranking well in classic search helps, but does not guarantee being picked up by an AI engine. These engines do not mechanically reuse the first page: they favour clear, factual, easy-to-cite sources, and cross-check what is said about you in several places. A brand can rank first on its keywords yet be absent from AI answers.

Conversely, a modest but clearly described company, consistent from one source to the next, can be cited where a larger competitor is not. The rules are changing, and they can be measured: you cannot steer what you do not look at.

Knowing where you stand

The first step is simple: ask several AI engines the questions a customer in your field would ask, and watch who is cited, in what order, with what accuracy. That means covering several tools and several phrasings so you are not relying on luck.

Our free pre-diagnosis does it for you, with no account to create: a snapshot of your presence across several AI engines, in your market's language, with what stands out for your competitors. It is the starting picture for understanding your place in conversational search.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google AI Mode the same as Google search ranking?

No. Classic ranking places you in the list of links; AI mode generates a synthetic answer that names only a few brands. You can rank well in the links and be absent from the AI answer — they are two different mechanisms, to be watched separately.

Which AI engines should I watch first?

The ones your customers actually use, which depends on your market and language. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI mode cover most usage today. What matters is watching several, because their answers diverge sharply.

If I rank well on Google, am I visible in AIs?

Not automatically. Good ranking helps, but AI engines favour clear, factual sources and cross-check several places. The only way to know is to measure directly what these engines say about you, rather than infer it from your position in classic results.
