AI awareness
AI awareness refers to an artificial intelligence "knowing" a brand — meaning it holds information about it in its training memory or via web search — independent of its spontaneous citation frequency on non-branded questions.
It's distinct from AI visibility in the broader sense: a brand can be known by an AI (it answers correctly if asked "what do you know about [brand]?") without necessarily being spontaneously cited when a customer asks a generic question about the industry.
This distinction matters for prioritizing actions: a brand unknown to AIs must first exist in their eyes — clear sources, up-to-date information — before even seeking to be spontaneously cited. Our guide on measuring awareness details this two-stage progression.
